Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, when a suspected motorcycle thief was lynched and set ablaze by an angry mob in Makurdi, the state capital.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect allegedly attempted to snatch a commercial motorcycle from its owner. The victim’s alarm drew the attention of residents, who pursued and apprehended the suspect.

In a swift act of jungle justice, the mob descended on him and later set him on fire, killing him on the spot.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, residents have expressed worry over the growing trend of mob justice in the state, urging authorities to strengthen security and ensure that suspects are handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution rather than being subjected to extrajudicial killings.
