Fresh diplomatic tensions have erupted between Nigeria and the United States as officials in Abuja have accused the U.S. Mission in Nigeria of orchestrating a “relentless smear campaign” aimed at discrediting the country’s leadership and violating established diplomatic conventions.

At the heart of the row is the U.S. Mission’s reported circulation of an article by The Africa Report, a Paris-based publication, which harshly criticised Nigerian political elites for alleged wasteful governance—particularly citing the construction of new Government Houses in Oyo and Gombe States. The article accused the governors of excessive spending at a time when many Nigerians are battling economic hardship.

However, Nigerian officials allege that the negative reporting is not entirely objective. According to sources, the publisher of The Africa Report—who inherited the magazine from his father—had earlier approached the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to sponsor an “Africa Roundtable” event in Abidjan.

After the governors reportedly declined the request, officials claim this rejection led to a strained relationship, which has now allegedly culminated in retaliatory media coverage. They further allege that the U.S. Mission has “amplified the publication’s claims gleefully,” sparking accusations of foreign interference.

“This is not just biased journalism being circulated,” one senior diplomat told reporters. “It is a targeted campaign that undermines our sovereignty and breaches international diplomatic protocols.”

Officials cited Article 41(1) of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which explicitly prohibits diplomatic missions from interfering in the internal affairs of host countries. “What we are seeing is a clear violation,” the diplomat added.

This incident compounds a growing list of grievances Nigerian officials have expressed in recent years over perceived U.S. condescension. Among the most notable is a decades-old U.S. intelligence prediction that Nigeria would collapse by the year 2000—a prophecy that has long been debunked. More recently, Washington’s July 15, 2025, travel advisory—warning American citizens to avoid 18 Nigerian states due to insecurity and poor healthcare—has drawn sharp criticism.

Analysts and government sources have called the travel advisory “alarmist” and “lacking context,” noting that while certain regions face legitimate security concerns, urban centres such as Lagos and Abuja remain vibrant and relatively safe.

“It’s ironic that a country projected to suffer nearly 47,000 gun-related deaths this year feels comfortable painting Nigeria with a broad brush,” one source said. “Many of our cities are safer than high-crime American cities. It’s a distorted narrative.”

Despite the escalation, Nigerian officials say they remain committed to preserving diplomatic ties with the United States but insist that future engagements must be rooted in mutual respect.

“We value the decades of support and cooperation with the United States,” a senior aide to the presidency noted. “But this relationship must be one of equals. Our national dignity and sovereignty are not up for negotiation.”

As the controversy simmers, both governments are expected to engage through diplomatic backchannels to de-escalate tensions and reinforce the foundation of their longstanding relationship.
