The Osun State Police Command has issued a caution to residents to take preventive measures against avoidable fire outbreaks, especially during the ongoing dry season.
The warning follows reports of a rise in fire incidents across the state. It was contained in a statement released on Thursday in Osogbo by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi.
The Command advised members of the public to always switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use and to refrain from burning bushes or refuse near residential areas.
Residents were also urged to handle flammable items such as gas cylinders, candles, and premium motor spirit (petrol) with caution, ensuring they are kept away from heat sources or open flames to prevent fire outbreaks.
In addition, the police encouraged households and offices to procure fire extinguishers where possible, stressing that prompt response during emergencies could significantly reduce loss of lives and property.
Reassuring the public, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property as its primary responsibility.
Residents were advised to contact the police control room via 08039537995 or 08123823981, or the Federal Fire Service on 08122695959 and 09035818584, in the event of a fire outbreak.
