The Senate Committee on Aviation has pledged to investigate recent controversial incidents involving Nigerian airline operators and passengers, following public outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of aviation safety protocols.
The incidents, which occurred within the past two weeks, have raised concerns about passenger conduct, airline procedures, and the general state of discipline within the aviation sector.
Last week, renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, was accused of disrupting a ValueJet flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after allegedly standing in front of an aircraft and obstructing its take-off.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a female passenger, Comfort Emmanson, was forcibly removed from an Ibom Air Uyo–Lagos flight for allegedly refusing to switch off her mobile phone during take-off preparations.
A viral video showed her slapping a female air hostess who insisted she comply with safety rules, sparking heated debates on social media about passenger behaviour and airline enforcement measures.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, described the incidents as “too dangerous for silence” and stressed the need for immediate and coordinated action to protect the integrity of the aviation sector.
“In the exercise of its constitutional powers, the committee will be engaging key regulatory bodies, operators, security agencies, and public interest groups to establish the facts, review existing procedures, and ensure that any necessary corrective measures are swiftly implemented,” Abdulfatai stated.
“We will not allow procedural gaps or lapses in enforcement to undermine safety, professionalism, or public trust in our aviation system. The Senate Committee on Aviation will ensure accountability at all levels.”
The committee assured Nigerians of its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and effective oversight, vowing to implement measures that will prevent future breaches and restore public confidence in air travel.
