President Bola Tinubu departed Yokohama, Japan, on Thursday night for Brazil, where he is scheduled to begin a state visit on August 24, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga, in a release dated August 22, 2025, explained that the President would make a brief stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasilia, the Brazilian capital.
“President Tinubu will continue his diplomatic engagements in Brazil after successfully attending the Ninth Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD9),” the statement read.
The President embarked on his two-nation tour on August 15, leaving Abuja with a short layover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before arriving in Yokohama on August 18.
While in Japan, Tinubu participated in the opening ceremony and plenary of TICAD9 on August 20.
He also held bilateral meetings with Japanese officials and business leaders, focusing on investment opportunities and Nigeria’s economic reforms.
His visit culminated in an interactive session with Nigerians living in Japan, where he reassured them of his administration’s commitment to diaspora engagement.
Onanuga noted that the discussions in Japan were “highly productive,” adding that the President is now set to consolidate on those outcomes with fresh strategic cooperation in Brazil.
The TICAD9 conference, co-hosted by Japan, the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank, ran from August 20 to 22 in Yokohama. It centered on Africa’s economic transformation, private investment, innovation, and building a resilient and sustainable society.
President Tinubu is expected to engage with Brazilian leaders and explore new avenues of collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s ties with South America’s largest economy.
