LPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Leon Usigbe, a seasoned journalist with The Tribune Newspapers and Abuja Bureau Chief, who died on Friday night following a brief illness.

Dr. Usigbe, a veteran member of the State House Press Corps, was remembered by the President as a beacon of ethical journalism and a professional who upheld truth and balance in his reporting throughout his distinguished career.

In a condolence statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Usigbe’s steadfast dedication to journalistic integrity, describing him as a respected correspondent whose calm disposition and sharp insights enriched Nigeria’s democratic space.

“His work was pivotal in keeping Nigerians informed on the inner workings of the presidency and governance at large,” Tinubu said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues at The Tribune, and the entire State House Press Corps. May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn this great loss.”

Joining in mourning the loss, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, also issued a touching tribute, describing Usigbe as “an outstanding journalist, a highly cerebral professional, and a shining light within the Nigerian media.”

Idris reflected on Usigbe’s articulate and thought-provoking presence at press briefings, both at the Federal Ministry of Information and in the Presidential Villa. He noted that the late journalist’s contributions consistently elevated national discourse and served to bridge the gap between government and the media.

“As a pen-wielding advocate for democracy and national development, Leon Usigbe brought intellectual rigour, depth, and balance to his reporting,” the Minister said. “His passing is a monumental loss — not just to Tribune or the journalism profession, but to the entire nation.”

He extended condolences to the Usigbe family, the management and staff of The Tribune, the media community, and the people of Edo State, from where the journalist hailed.

Dr. Leon Usigbe was known for his quiet yet impactful presence in Nigeria’s media landscape, with a career marked by precision, dignity, and commitment to the public good. His legacy will live on in the countless stories he told and the democratic ideals he championed through his pen.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
