Tinubu Lifts Six-Month Emergency Rule in Rivers, Orders Governor Fubara to Return to Office

President Bola Tinubu has officially lifted the six-month state of emergency earlier imposed on Rivers State, directing the return of democratic governance in the oil-rich region.

In a statement issued from the Presidency on Wednesday, the President announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was suspended from office, should resume his duties on Thursday, September 18, alongside his deputy, Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly.

Tinubu noted that the decision marked a new chapter for the people of Rivers, emphasizing the restoration of constitutional order after months of emergency administration.

“It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today,” the President declared.

With the suspension lifted, Governor Fubara, his deputy, and Speaker Martins Amaewhule, along with other lawmakers, are expected to fully return to their respective offices starting Thursday.
