The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of innocent travellers from Kaduna State, who were ambushed and murdered in Plateau State while on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.
The victims met their tragic end in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, a region that has witnessed recurring violence in recent months.
Governor Yahaya, in a statement signed by his Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Uba Misilli, expressed deep sorrow over the killings, describing them as “barbaric and cowardly” acts that have no place in a civilised society.
“I am deeply saddened by this horrific and inhumane attack. Such mindless violence against innocent citizens is unacceptable and must be met with swift and decisive justice,” Yahaya stated.
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kaduna State, especially the families who lost loved ones in the attack.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the deceased souls and for strength to the bereaved families during this period of mourning.
Commending the Plateau State Government and security agencies for their prompt response and the reported arrest of some suspects linked to the massacre, Governor Yahaya emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of the perpetrators.
“This is not just about accountability; it is about restoring faith in the rule of law and protecting the rights of every Nigerian citizen,” he said.
Yahaya also used the opportunity to appeal to residents of Plateau, Kaduna, and neighbouring states to remain calm, shun reprisal attacks, and maintain peace. He stressed that retaliatory violence would only deepen existing divides and prolong the cycle of bloodshed.
“Let us not allow the actions of a few to divide our communities or ignite further violence,” he urged.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Northern Governors’ Forum to regional peace and security, the Gombe governor said the forum will continue to work together to tackle insecurity, foster inter-communal harmony, and strengthen intelligence-sharing mechanisms.
“The safety and security of our people remains our top priority. We will continue to work together as Northern Governors to strengthen community relations, improve intelligence sharing, and ensure such tragedies never happen again,” Yahaya concluded.
