The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has turned to spiritual fortification as it confronts mounting challenges in Nigeria’s media space.
During its 2025 Council Press Week service held at World Harvest Ministries in Jikwoyi, Abuja, the union called for divine strength to navigate the turbulent media terrain, which has been increasingly threatened by economic pressure, insecurity, and attacks on press freedom.
Delivering a sermon titled “Seeking Deliverance from the Athens Troubles of Life,” Archbishop Leonard Kawas admonished journalists to remain spiritually alert and courageous.
He encouraged them to remember their divine authority and to stand firm in faith amidst adversity.
“There is a battle at every level of life,” Kawas said. “You must know who you are and not be caught unawares. Christians have the power to bind and to loose, and must reject the devil at every turn.”
The service brought together a wide spectrum of attendees, including Christians, Muslims, and adherents of other faiths—demonstrating the inclusive and united front of the NUJ FCT community.
Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Press Week Organising Committee, Evelyn Onyilo, described the service as an act of thanksgiving to God for sustaining the union through the storms and for guiding its leadership.
The service marked the beginning of a week-long lineup of activities aimed at celebrating journalism, reinforcing professional ethics, and strengthening camaraderie among media practitioners.
