A public affairs analyst and veteran journalist, Comrade Bashiru, has cautioned that the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) stands no chance of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election without the active involvement of its sole House of Representatives member, Hon. Leke Abejide.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja over the weekend, Bashiru stressed that Abejide, who currently chairs the House Committee on Customs and Excise in the 10th National Assembly, is a pivotal figure in the party and must be fully integrated into its decision-making processes.
He warned that sidelining Abejide from the party’s strategies and engagements could trigger internal discord and potentially lead to the total collapse of the coalition.
> “Consequently, it is imperative to categorically state that all efforts, time, and resources committed to the coalition are futile in the absence of Hon. Leke,” Bashiru declared.
His comments come amid political turbulence in the ADC, as the opposition coalition recently appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim chairman in a bid to build a united front against President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
The coalition boasts an array of political heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers). However, internal divisions persist, with several ADC members — including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu — rejecting the David Mark-led interim leadership.
Bashiru’s remarks underscore the delicate balance within the opposition’s alliance and highlight growing concerns that unresolved disputes could derail its 2027 ambitions.
