A passenger bus traveling out of Makurdi was involved in a serious accident in the early hours of today after it veered off the road and somersaulted into the bush, just a few kilometers before Yelewata.
While casualties have been confirmed, the exact number of victims remains unclear as rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Eyewitnesses urged residents to reach out to loved ones who may have boarded vehicles from Makurdi earlier in the day. One of the first responders who reported the incident to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office in Yelewata alleged that officers declined to respond, claiming the crash site was outside their jurisdiction. He was reportedly advised to redirect the complaint to the FRSC unit in Daudu.
As at press time, details of the crash and the scale of the fatalities are yet to be officially confirmed.
