A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed support for the potential return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to contest the 2027 presidential election under the PDP platform.
Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement issued by his media aide, Hassan Mahmoud, on Thursday, described the trio’s reported interest in rejoining the PDP and vying for the party’s presidential ticket as a positive development for Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, the presence of experienced political figures in the PDP race would deepen the culture of inclusiveness and competitive politics within the party.
“The more, the merrier. A robust and competitive primary will not divide the PDP; rather, it will reassert its credentials as the true party of democracy in Nigeria,” Olawepo-Hashim stated.
He stressed that Jonathan, Atiku, Obi, and other aspirants should be warmly welcomed if they decide to contest, noting that their participation could strengthen the PDP’s chances in 2027 and boost the democratic process.
This statement comes amid growing speculation over political realignments ahead of the next general elections, with PDP strategists reportedly courting influential figures to bolster the party’s strength.
