The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Emmanuel Nwachukwu, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), as the winner of the Anambra South Senatorial by-election held on Saturday.
Announcing the results on Sunday at the INEC office in Nnewi Local Government Area, the Returning Officer, Prof. Frank Ojiako, said Nwachukwu polled 90,408 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 19,847 votes.
Mr. Donald Amangbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 2,889 votes, while other candidates from nine political parties shared the remaining votes.
Declaring the result, Prof. Ojiako said:
“I hereby make the declaration that Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
He commended the political parties and candidates for their peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process and hailed voters for turning out in large numbers to exercise their franchise.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the election became necessary following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate until July 2024.
The by-election was keenly contested by 12 political parties across the senatorial district.
