In a renewed effort to unify the Labour Party ahead of future political engagements, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, has met with the factional National Chairman, Julius Abure.
The meeting, held in Abuja on Sunday, was part of a broader peace initiative spearheaded by Datti to mend the growing rift within the party.
The divisions—primarily between camps loyal to Abure and those backing former presidential candidate Peter Obi—have threatened to destabilize the Labour Party’s recent momentum on the national stage.
Speaking after the meeting, Datti emphasized the urgent need for unity and reaffirmed his commitment to reconciling all aggrieved stakeholders, including Obi and other influential voices within the party.
“I have come not to take sides but to foster peace. The Labour Party is bigger than any individual, and we must not allow our differences to destroy the hope we represent for millions of Nigerians,” he said.
The party confirmed that Datti also plans to hold talks with the Lamidi Apapa faction, key members of the Obidient Movement, and other grassroots leaders in the coming weeks.
Party observers see this reconciliation push as crucial ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Labour Party insiders warning that failure to resolve internal disputes could significantly weaken the party’s chances.
The meeting is seen as a major step toward rebuilding confidence among supporters and restoring cohesion within the party’s ranks.
