A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a male Point of Sales (POS) operator was electrocuted after a high-tension wire snapped and fell on him.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was standing in front of his shop, located directly beneath the power line, when the wire suddenly snapped and struck him.
Shockingly, as of Tuesday, his lifeless body remained on the ground with the high-tension cable still on him, emitting smoke and sparks that caused widespread panic in the area.
A disturbing video from the scene has since gone viral on social media, showing the horrifying moment with smoke still rising from the victim’s body.
Though the identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed, sources in the community revealed that he was recently married.
Reacting to the incident, the Managing Director and CEO of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Ossy Onuko, described the death as “unfortunate and avoidable,” reiterating the dangers of trading or building under high-tension lines.
“This is something we’ve constantly warned against. It’s a suicide mission to run any kind of business under a high-tension wire,” Onuko said. “Sadly, this death highlights the very risk we try to prevent with our sensitisation campaigns and enforcement actions.”
He urged the public to take safety seriously and support government efforts to prevent such disasters. “No life should be lost to something so preventable. People must begin to take personal responsibility and educate others too,” he added.
Authorities have been urged to swiftly remove the victim’s body and restore calm to the area while further investigations are expected to follow.
