Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the embattled lawmaker representing Kogi Central, has vowed to escalate her legal fight against the National Assembly following its refusal to reinstate her, despite a Federal High Court ruling declaring her suspension unconstitutional.
Speaking on Tuesday, Natasha expressed deep concern over what she described as a blatant disregard for judicial authority. She revealed that she would be consulting her legal team immediately to file an appeal in a higher court to challenge the Senate’s continued defiance.
“My team and I are exploring every legal remedy to ensure that the rule of law is upheld in this country,” she said. “No arm of government should be allowed to operate above the constitution.”
The senator, who was suspended in March 2025 over alleged misconduct, had received a favorable judgment from the Federal High Court last week, which invalidated her suspension and ordered her immediate reinstatement.
However, the Senate has since insisted it would not reverse its decision, setting the stage for a potential constitutional crisis.
The situation has drawn reactions from civil society groups, legal practitioners, and political observers, with many warning that the Senate’s posture could undermine the country’s democracy and the principle of separation of powers.
Natasha’s legal team is expected to file the appeal in the coming days, signaling a prolonged legal battle that could redefine the limits of legislative authority in Nigeria.
