ARISE News Channel has been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of one of its young journalists, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her home in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
The 29-year-old, fondly called Sommie, was a news anchor, reporter, and producer at the station, where she built a reputation as a trusted voice and a familiar face to viewers across Nigeria. Beyond journalism, she was also a trained lawyer who colleagues described as professional, supportive, and deeply passionate about her craft.
In a statement issued via its official X handle, ARISE News expressed grief over the loss, describing Sommie as “a cherished member of the ARISE family whose vibrant voice connected with millions of viewers.” The organization further urged security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Condolence messages have continued to pour in from colleagues in the media industry, civil society organizations, the legal profession, and members of the public who admired her work. Many have demanded urgent action to address the rising insecurity in the capital city.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Sommie’s parents, siblings, friends, and loved ones,” ARISE News said. “Though her voice has gone silent, her legacy of passion and commitment will remain with us.”
