Two-time presidential aspirant and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot be unseated in the 2027 general elections unless opposition parties form a united and formidable coalition.
Momodu made the statement during his appearance on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State’s monthly programme, Guest of the Month, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
While speaking on the future of the PDP and the state of Nigeria’s political opposition, he expressed deep dissatisfaction with the internal crisis within his party.
According to him, although the PDP has the structure and potential to defeat the APC, its current disunity renders it incapable of mounting a serious challenge in 2027.
“My soul has already left the PDP, only my body remains,” Momodu declared, signaling his growing disillusionment with the party.
He accused the APC of actively working to destabilize the PDP, which he described as the only opposition party with the strength to challenge the ruling government.
He said the APC is deliberately fostering divisions within the PDP, both from within and outside, as a strategy to maintain power.
“If the PDP is united, it has all it takes to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress in 2027, but forces against it would not allow this to be,” he said.
“The APC is jittery about the PDP. That is why its leadership at all levels is ensuring the party remains factionalized.
There is no way a disunited PDP can wrest power from the APC in 2027. The ideology of the ruling party is to weaken the main opposition party.”
Momodu also pointed to internal sabotage, claiming that some PDP members are being used to undermine the party’s stability and progress.
Despite this, he emphasized that the PDP remains a law-abiding party that adheres to due process in taking disciplinary actions against erring members.
Turning to the 2027 presidential election, Momodu emphasized that the only way to defeat Tinubu is through the formation of a strong and strategic coalition across party lines.
He stated that no single party, including the PDP in its current state, could realistically mount a serious challenge without joining forces with others.
He also highlighted the importance of regional strategy in choosing a credible candidate to oppose Tinubu, stating that any viable challenger must come from a different geopolitical zone.
“It is almost impossible to remove President Tinubu unless we build a formidable team and a solid coalition,” he said.
“Whoever would contest favourably against the current president must come from the opposite direction in terms of regions in Nigeria.”
Momodu’s comments come amid growing calls within opposition ranks for unity and a strategic rethinking ahead of the next electoral cycle, as Nigerians begin to weigh their options for the post-Tinubu era.
