Chelsea’s hopes of claiming back-to-back Premier League wins were dashed on Saturday as Fábio Carvalho’s stoppage-time equaliser snatched a 2-2 draw for Brentford in a pulsating London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Blues, looking to build momentum under new manager Enzo Maresca, were undone by familiar defensive lapses despite flashes of attacking brilliance from Cole Palmer and Moisés Caicedo.

Brentford made the brighter start and deservedly went ahead midway through the first half. Kevin Schade capitalised on slack defending, racing onto a swift counterattack before finishing coolly past Djordje Petrovic. Chelsea struggled to impose themselves in the opening period, frustrated by the Bees’ compact shape and aggressive pressing.

After the restart, the visitors looked transformed. Palmer restored parity with a composed strike, sparking Chelsea into life. Their dominance was rewarded when Caicedo unleashed a spectacular long-range effort that flew into the top corner to make it 2-1 — his first Premier League goal for the club.

The turnaround seemed set to secure Chelsea a statement victory. But Brentford, under recently appointed manager Keith Andrews, showed trademark resilience. Spurred on by a raucous home crowd, they pressed for an equaliser until the very last moment.

Deep into added time, a long throw into the Chelsea box created chaos, and when the loose ball fell to Carvalho, the Portuguese forward pounced, rifling home to send the stadium into ecstasy and leave Chelsea’s players crestfallen.

Maresca cut a frustrated figure at full-time, lamenting his side’s inability to manage key moments defensively. While Palmer and Caicedo impressed in attack, lapses at the back once again cost Chelsea valuable points.

For Brentford, the draw was celebrated like a victory. Henderson’s control in midfield, Schade’s sharp finishing, and Carvalho’s dramatic strike embodied the fight and spirit Andrews has sought to instill.

The result leaves Chelsea ruing another missed opportunity to climb the table, their inconsistency still a glaring obstacle. Brentford, meanwhile, continue to prove their resilience against the league’s heavyweights.
