Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has formally demanded a public retraction and apology from the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mkar, Professor Zacharys Gundu, over statements he described as “false, malicious and defamatory.”

The demand was contained in a letter dated July 22, 2025, and signed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Ahmed Raji, on behalf of the governor.

Professor Gundu had, during a recent town hall programme aired on News Central Television, accused Governor Sule of shielding and aiding violent herdsmen responsible for attacks across the Middle Belt.

According to the letter sighted by The Guardian, the professor alleged that Governor Sule, like his predecessor, was “masking the problem” and providing “refuge” and land to those perpetrating the violence in the region.

The VC also linked the governor to the displacement of citizens and allocation of their lands to armed groups.

The governor, through his counsel, described the comments as reckless and damaging, demanding an immediate retraction and public apology from Professor Gundu, failing which legal action will be instituted to seek redress.
