Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming persistent internal turmoil and the party’s inability to maintain unity.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The letter was made public after it was shared on Facebook by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima.
In the statement, Suswam explained that his decision was driven by the party’s continued failure to resolve deep-rooted disputes affecting its leadership, structure, discipline, and ideological direction.
He noted that although the PDP had given him the opportunity to serve Nigeria in several roles — as a member of the House of Representatives, Governor of Benue State, and Senator — the party has now drifted away from the unity and democratic ideals it once represented.
According to him, unresolved conflicts have persisted for years despite multiple reconciliation efforts, leaving the party trapped in a cycle of instability with no clear solution in sight.
Suswam said he could no longer remain in the PDP, as its current condition conflicts with his personal beliefs and his desire to contribute to national development through a stable political platform.
He stressed that political parties should be spaces for constructive engagement, discipline, and ideas, not continuous internal battles.
While stepping aside, he expressed hope that the PDP might someday find the courage and agreement needed to address its internal challenges.
As of the time of this report, the PDP leadership has not issued any official response to his resignation.
