The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has honoured Dr. Solomon Andiir for his outstanding contributions to sports development, youth empowerment, and leadership across Benue State and Nigeria.
The hornor and award took place at the MKO Abiola stadium Abuja during the association’s diamonds celebration.
Dr. Andiir whose work has revitalized interest and participation in tennis, para-sports, and basketball within and beyond Benue, described the recognition as a motivation to do even more for the advancement of sports.
Reflecting on his journey, he said his involvement in sports began purely out of passion but has since evolved into a lifelong mission.
“It all started as a passion, but over time, it has become part of me and culture,” he stated.
“This recognition only drives me to do more for the progress of our youth and the development of sports in Benue State and Nigeria.”
Dr. Andiir also expressed gratitude to sports journalists in Benue and across the country for their continuous support and constructive criticism, noting that their work plays a vital role in shaping sports administration and inspiring excellence.
Looking ahead, he reaffirmed his commitment to empowering young athletes and improving sports structures across the region.
“Going forward, we’re going to achieve great things in Benue. My message to sports lovers, administrators, and players is simple stay dedicated, keep believing, and together we can make sports a major unifying force in our state and beyond,” he added.
The SWAN recognition adds to his list of honours as a sports leader, CEO, and philanthropist whose initiatives continue to promote youth engagement and sporting excellence across multiple disciplines.
Other distinguished honourees at the event included former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare; Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko; Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade; DG of the National Institute of Sports, Philip Shaibu; and Silas Agara, President of the Nigeria Golf Federation, among others.
The Diamond Jubilee celebration, themed “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring Its Legacy, Shaping the Future,” featured lectures, awards, and panel discussions. The two-day event, which began on October 30, concluded at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, with a reaffirmation of SWAN’s commitment to promoting sports excellence across Nigeria.
