It was jubilation at the Joseph Saawuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM) sports arena when star striker, Iorliam Jnr Theophilus, popularly known as “Stew Man”, delivered a decisive goal that ended years of defeat against arch-rivals, Moses Orshio Adasu University Makurdi (MOAUM).
For years, JOSTUM had struggled to secure a win over MOAUM in football, a record that became a psychological barrier for the team. However, Theophilus, who had not featured in recent clashes between the two institutions, returned to the pitch with a promise: “Even if JOSTUM not being able to win MOAUM was a myth, I will break it with determination and the grace of God.”
The tense match saw both sides locked in a goalless first half, with opportunities wasted at both ends. But just 15 minutes into the second half, Theophilus made good on his promise. With a powerful and well-placed strike, he broke through MOAUM’s defense, sending the ball straight into the net and breaking the long-standing jinx.
The stadium erupted in thunderous cheers as JOSTUM fans celebrated what many described as a historic moment. The victory came with a ₦500,000 cash prize, further heightening the excitement.
Speaking after the match, JOSTUM’s coach praised Theophilus’ resilience and discipline, calling him “a player destined for greatness.”
Now hailed as the hero of the day, Stew Man has not only given JOSTUM a long-awaited victory but also shown that with determination and skill, barriers can be broken. Many are already calling for him to be supported and sponsored to showcase his football talent on bigger stages in Nigeria and beyond.
