President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), signaling a renewed push in Nigeria’s climate governance and green economic transformation.
Majekodunmi succeeds Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the Council’s pioneer Director-General, who assumed office in June 2024 and is widely credited with laying a strong institutional foundation for the Council.
A renowned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer, Majekodunmi brings over 17 years of experience in climate policy, finance, and regulatory affairs to the role. Before her latest appointment, she served as the Financial Adviser to the NCCC, where she played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s green financing strategy.
Her appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
“Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion,” the statement read.
President Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the outgoing DG, Dr. Madueke, for her “dedicated service and the strong foundation laid for the Council’s continued growth.”
Established under the Climate Change Act, 2021, the National Council on Climate Change is Nigeria’s apex body for coordinating national climate action. Its responsibilities include implementing climate policies, overseeing the carbon budget, and mobilising green finance for sustainable development.
Majekodunmi’s appointment is expected to further energize the Council’s efforts to position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s climate transition.
