The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled a groundbreaking policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring at the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, Commandant-General, and above.
The initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is aimed at significantly boosting welfare for officers within the ministry.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced the policy on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he highlighted the ministry’s accomplishments and reiterated its commitment to enhancing institutional efficiency and capacity across all agencies under its supervision.
A statement from the NPRO and Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, confirmed the minister’s announcement and expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his support.
“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said.
Speaking at the retreat, Tunji-Ojo revealed that the ministry had cleared a longstanding backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers elevated in the past two years.
He noted that future promotions would be determined under a new performance-based system designed to reward capacity and merit.
In a move to strengthen institutional development, the minister announced the creation of new training manuals and disclosed that construction is underway on a world-class Fire Academy, designed to rival leading global institutions like the Arizona Fire Academy.
Tunji-Ojo also emphasised the importance of mental health in the workplace, assuring officers of the ministry’s full support, and urged the Federal Fire Service to pursue private sector partnerships to modernise operations, improve infrastructure, and enhance service delivery across Nigeria.
