President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the newly rehabilitated International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, now renamed the President Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre.
The unveiling ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, was attended by several top government officials, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; and Deputy Senate President, Jibril Barau.
The landmark facility, a major venue for both national and international events in Nigeria’s capital, underwent extensive renovations costing an estimated N39 billion. The rehabilitation work began in April 2024, following years of structural decline.
Tuesday’s event was filled with celebration and fanfare. A visibly jubilant Wike was seen dancing during the commissioning, marking what he described as a milestone achievement in infrastructure renewal under the Tinubu administration.
“This is not just a name change. It is a statement of the transformation taking place in the FCT,” Wike said, hailing the president for his support and commitment to urban renewal in the capital city.
The renaming and commissioning come as part of a broader rollout of projects being inaugurated by President Tinubu ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations. Several other infrastructural developments across the FCT are expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
The decision to rename the ICC in honour of President Tinubu has drawn both praise and criticism, with supporters calling it a deserved tribute to his contributions, while others question the optics of renaming national landmarks after sitting leaders.
Nevertheless, the revamped centre is expected to host high-profile events and serve as a symbol of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its public infrastructure.
