President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the Super Falcons and members of the technical crew in recognition of their triumphant performance at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The players, who recently returned home after clinching their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, were hosted on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a celebratory ceremony attended by top government officials, sports administrators, and dignitaries.
In addition to the national honours, President Tinubu announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each player and technical crew member, praising their resilience, patriotism, and the inspiration they bring to the nation and the African continent.
“You have not only brought honour to Nigeria, but you have shown the world the strength, determination, and grace of the Nigerian woman,” Tinubu declared during his address. “Your victory is not just in lifting the trophy, but in uniting a nation behind your effort and setting an example for the next generation.”
The President also emphasized his administration’s commitment to the development of women’s football and sports infrastructure in general, stating that the government would continue to invest in and support Nigerian athletes across all levels.
The honouring ceremony came a day after the Falcons were given a rousing welcome upon their return to Abuja, with fans celebrating their heroic performance and dominant display at the continental tournament.
With this recognition, the Super Falcons have further cemented their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s football team — and now, proud recipients of one of the country’s highest honours.
