In a historic move aimed at ending years of communal strife, the Tiv and Fulani communities in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State have signed a peace accord to halt recurring clashes that have claimed lives and disrupted livelihoods.
The agreement, facilitated by the leadership of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), was sealed on Monday at the 6 Brigade Headquarters conference room in Jalingo.
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, who led the initiative, described the peace accord as a crucial milestone in the Army’s ongoing non-kinetic approach to security and peacebuilding.
General Uwa said the meeting was convened in response to escalating tensions and lingering disputes between the two ethnic groups.
He brought together key stakeholders, including the Gassol Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, elders, and security officials, to chart a path toward sustainable peace.
While condemning the cycle of violence in the area, General Uwa cautioned against taking the law into one’s own hands.
He called for respect for the rule of law, urging attendees to act as ambassadors of peace and unity, which he emphasized as the bedrock of meaningful development.
In their joint resolution, representatives of both the Tiv and Fulani communities agreed to abandon hostilities, open lines of communication, and denounce the shielding of criminal elements.
They pledged to collaborate with security agencies by sharing timely intelligence to prevent further conflict.
Commending the initiative, Chairman Abubakar Usman praised the Nigerian Army for its commitment and proactive role in peace enforcement, noting that the accord is both timely and necessary for rebuilding trust and harmony in Gassol.
The peace pact, formally signed by both parties, underscored their joint commitment to uphold the resolutions and work with government and security institutions for full implementation.
