The paramount ruler of the Tiv Nation, His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Ayatse, Tor Tiv V, has introduced a number of reforms aimed at reshaping traditional and cultural practices in Tiv land.
The monarch made the declaration during the Ijir Tamen — a high-level meeting of traditional leaders — where he emphasized the need to modernize Tiv customs, promote fairness, reduce unnecessary expenses, and strengthen moral values within the society.
He announced that henceforth, all burial ceremonies across Tiv communities must be completed within three days and kept as private family affairs. The Tor Tiv frowned at loud and extravagant burials and directed that married women should no longer be compelled to contribute financially to burial activities except by choice. He equally put an end to burial remembrances, describing them as wasteful and needless.
On inheritance, the monarch stated that women should have the same rights as men to inherit family property, adding that such rights must be recognized and protected under the law. He said this move was necessary to promote justice and equality among the Tiv people.
Speaking on traditional marriages, the Tor Tiv placed a limit of ₦100,000 on the total cost of marriage requirements. He also banned the cutting of cakes during traditional weddings and ruled that celebrations for newly married women should not take place in their father-in-law’s house. He cautioned couples against violence, advising both husbands and wives to treat each other with love and respect.
Addressing the issue of leadership, Prof. Ayatse reaffirmed that no woman can be crowned king in Tiv land, warning that this aspect of tradition is not open to alteration. He further announced a ban on the consumption of locally brewed gin, popularly called Ogogoro, across Tiv communities.
The monarch explained that these new laws and reforms are binding on all Tiv people, whether at home or in the diaspora.
In a move to strengthen cultural awareness, the Tor Tiv also announced the creation of Tiv Television, which will first operate on Facebook before expanding into a standard broadcast channel. He went on to unveil a new initiative known as BAM, a program designed to empower Tiv women through access to loans and other financial support.
Although security issues were discussed during the meeting, the details were not disclosed to the public.
