A renewed wave of violence rocked Ngban, a community nestled between Daudu and Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, on Saturday, as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack that left two people dead and a woman severely tortured.
The victims, identified as Terkimbir Iorhen Igbawua and Mlumun Igbawua, lost their lives during the attack, which has once again highlighted the escalating insecurity in rural parts of Benue State.
The Chairman of Guma LGA, Hon. Maurice Orwough, confirmed the tragic incident during a visit to the affected area. He also took custody of a woman who was reportedly abducted and tortured by the assailants but later regained her freedom. She was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
In response to the tragedy, Hon. Orwough directed the Local Government Security Secretary to release funds to facilitate the burial of the victims, scheduled for Sunday.
While addressing residents during the visit, the council chairman assured the community that efforts were ongoing to bring lasting peace to the region.
Hon. Orwough was accompanied to the scene by the Council Chairman of Ukum, Hon. Jonathan Modi; Council Chairman of Buruku, Hon. Raymond Zege; and the Personal Special Assistant to the Benue State Governor on Protocol and Wardrobe, Hon. Emmanuel Iorbee.
The attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Benue State, a region long plagued by farmer-herder clashes and rural insecurity.
