According to report by The New York Times on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the United States House of Representatives narrowly approved a major Republican-backed bill that extends key tax cuts while making sharp reductions to federal social safety net programs.

The bill passed by a slim margin of 218 to 214, highlighting the stark partisan split and internal discord that has plagued the GOP for months.

The legislation, a centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda, had faced a turbulent journey through Congress, marked by fierce resistance from within the Republican ranks.

Speaker Mike Johnson scrambled for support in the final hours, working late into the night to sway skeptical lawmakers and prevent a legislative collapse.

Ultimately, all but two Republicans voted in favor of the bill, while every Democrat opposed it. The passage ensures the bill now heads to President Trump’s desk, just in time for the July 4 deadline he had publicly insisted on.

The sweeping measure not only extends Trump-era tax cuts—particularly benefiting corporations and high-income earners—but also imposes deep cuts to federal assistance programs including food aid, housing subsidies, and Medicaid.

Critics have slammed the bill as a blow to vulnerable Americans, accusing Republicans of prioritizing tax relief for the wealthy at the expense of the poor and working class.

Democratic leaders decried the move as “cruel” and “reckless,” warning that the legislation could exacerbate poverty and widen inequality.

Republican lawmakers, however, defended the bill as a bold step toward fiscal responsibility and economic growth. “This is about getting America back on track,” said Speaker Johnson. “We are empowering families, encouraging investment, and cutting unnecessary government waste.”

The bill’s passage marks a major victory for the Trump administration, which has faced mounting pressure to deliver on campaign promises ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. However, with the Senate likely to mount further challenges, the political battle over America’s fiscal future is far from over.
