Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a masterclass performance on Friday, thrashing Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
The emphatic victory secured Nigeria a spot in the semi-finals — their record 13th appearance at this stage of the tournament — and extended their clean sheet streak to four consecutive matches.
From the onset, the nine-time champions looked hungry, determined to avenge their 1-0 loss to Zambia in the 2022 WAFCON third-place playoff.
It took just two minutes for Nigeria to announce their intent, as Osinachi Ohale rose to head home a cross and give the Super Falcons an early lead.
Zambia, led by African Women’s Footballer of the Year Barbara Banda, tried to mount a response, but the Falcons maintained their grip on the game.
Zambia, led by African Women’s Footballer of the Year Barbara Banda, tried to mount a response, but the Falcons maintained their grip on the game. Esther Okoronkwo doubled the lead in the 26th minute with a superb half-volley after a precise first touch.
Just before halftime, Chinwendu Ihezuo added a third, coolly finishing past goalkeeper Ngambo Musole.
The second half saw more of the same dominance from the Super Falcons. Oluwatosin Demehin made it 4-0 in the 68th minute, heading in from close range after sustained pressure.
Coach Justin Madugu introduced fresh legs in Asisat Oshoala and Christy Ucheibe, and the substitutions paid off quickly.
In added time, captain Rasheedat Ajibade floated in a well-weighted cross, which Folashade Ijamilusi converted at the near post to seal the 5-0 demolition.
The Falcons’ resounding win not only booked their semi-final berth but also reaffirmed their dominance in African women’s football.
With a perfect defensive record so far and five different players finding the net, Nigeria are once again looking like strong contenders for a 10th WAFCON title.
