Political activist and BringBackOurGirls co-convener Aisha Yesufu has criticised Nigerians for directing their anger at fellow citizens instead of pressuring the government over the country’s escalating killings and insecurity.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Yesufu argued that public outrage has been successfully redirected away from the political class, leaving people squabbling about the identities of victims rather than demanding an end to the violence. She said the result is a population exhausted and distracted, while those in power avoid accountability.
Yesufu also condemned the role of religious and ethnic loyalties in shaping public responses to attacks, saying many only express concern when victims share their faith or tribe. She suggested this selective outrage further weakens collective calls for justice.
Blaming the current administration, Yesufu wrote that it has “gotten defeated people fighting themselves instead of fighting him and his illegitimate administration over the killings in Nigeria,” and warned that, in today’s climate, “you need to be strategically killed for your death to matter in Nigeria.”
