The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Dr. Yilwatda Nentawe, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, as the substantive National Chairman of the ruling party.
The decision was reached during a high-level NEC meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors of APC-controlled states, and key party stakeholders.
Nentawe’s emergence marks a significant shift in the party’s leadership structure, as he takes over from the interim chairman who had been steering the affairs of the party following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje earlier in the year.
A former academic and technocrat, Nentawe has gained a reputation for policy reforms and grassroots engagement during his time at the Humanitarian Ministry.
His appointment is seen as part of a broader strategy by the APC to rejuvenate its leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking shortly after his confirmation, Nentawe expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to unite the party and strengthen its democratic values.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and deep commitment to the ideals of our party. Together, we will build a stronger, more inclusive APC that delivers for all Nigerians,” he said.
The announcement has triggered reactions across political circles, with many hailing it as a strategic move to consolidate party unity and improve internal cohesion.
