Bala Mohammed Dumps PDP, Defects to APM with Loyalists in Bauchi
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), alongside members of the PDP loyal to the Tanimu Turaki-led executives.
Mohammed made the announcement on Saturday after a meeting with political stakeholders convened to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership crisis and chart a new political direction.
Speaking after the meeting, the governor said he had spent the last eight days in Abuja holding consultations with key stakeholders in a bid to resolve the party’s internal crisis.
According to him, the Supreme Court ruling, which nullified parallel conventions conducted by rival factions in the PDP, had drastically changed the political situation. He said the judgment effectively removed legal recognition from both factions, leaving the party’s Board of Trustees to temporarily manage its affairs.
The governor noted that recent developments had created further uncertainty within the party.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” Mohammed said.
He thanked the PDP for providing him a platform for political growth and public service but insisted that the time had come to move forward for the sake of governance and stability.
“However, as responsible leaders, we cannot allow our people to be left without a credible and effective political platform,” he added.
Mohammed explained that joining the APM was a strategic move designed to ensure political continuity and future electoral success, describing the party as a stable platform free from legal disputes.
He also disclosed that members of the State Executive Council seeking elective offices had resigned in line with constitutional requirements.
“We remain PDP at heart. We are leaving not out of bitterness, but out of necessity—to continue the struggle for good governance,” the governor stated.
Declaring his new political base, Mohammed said: “After extensive consultations, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement.”
To ensure a smooth transition, he announced the creation of a compliance committee, online membership registration for supporters, formal resignation of interested members, engagement with APM leadership, and the setting up of a committee to liaise with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He urged supporters to remain calm and united, stressing that the decision was a deliberate repositioning and not an act of desperation.
Meanwhile, APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, formally welcomed the governor and his supporters into the party.
Dantalle described the APM as a clean and democratic party guided by the motto, “Nigeria First,” with values rooted in integrity, sacrifice, and service.
He praised Mohammed’s leadership style, describing Bauchi as a state where democracy thrives and citizens enjoy inclusive political participation.
The chairman also highlighted the party’s performance in recent local government elections, saying it won councillorship seats and remained competitive among other parties.
He assured the new members that APM has no internal crisis and operates strictly according to its constitution.
Dantalle later presented Governor Mohammed with his membership card and party insignia, symbolising his formal admission into the party.
He added that the party’s symbol, the cassava plant, represents resilience, inclusiveness, and economic value, reflecting its vision for national development.
