President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to remain united, vigilant, and actively involved in nation-building as the country celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

In a Democracy Day message released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Sunday Eyiboh, Akpabio praised Nigerians for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democracy despite the challenges experienced over the years.

Speaking on behalf of the 10th National Assembly, the Senate President described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a testament to endurance and determination, noting that although mistakes had been made along the way, the nation remained on the path toward achieving its democratic aspirations.

He urged citizens to continue believing in democratic governance and resist any attempts by forces seeking to undermine the country’s democratic progress. According to him, democracy should go beyond periodic elections and be rooted in accountability, justice, compassion, and service to the people.

Akpabio also encouraged Nigerian youths to play a more active role in politics and governance, stressing that they represent the future of the nation’s leadership.

“As we commemorate June 12, I encourage our youths not to remain on the sidelines but to actively participate in the political process. They are the leaders of tomorrow and must begin preparing for that responsibility today,” he said.

The Senate President further called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, transparency, social justice, accountable leadership, and active citizenship.

Addressing the security challenges facing the country, Akpabio appealed for greater cooperation between citizens and government in the fight against insecurity. He expressed confidence in the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to combat terrorism and secure the release of those held captive by criminal elements.

While acknowledging the hardships many Nigerians are facing, he assured citizens that the government remains committed to overcoming the nation’s security challenges and restoring peace across the country.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to support the administration’s efforts, expressing optimism that the country would eventually overcome its current difficulties and emerge stronger.
