Nigeria and Türkiye have sealed a strategic agreement to establish a military training facility in the country, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security framework amid ongoing threats.

The deal was finalised during bilateral discussions at the 2026 Antalya Diplomacy Forum between Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and his Turkish counterpart. Officials revealed that while a temporary training centre will kick-start operations, a permanent facility—likely in a coastal location—has already been earmarked.

Under the partnership, Nigerian military personnel will receive advanced training in critical areas, including Special Forces operations, counterterrorism, intelligence coordination, counter-drone warfare, counter-IED tactics, and United Nations pre-deployment exercises. Plans are also underway to send an initial batch of Nigerian troops to Türkiye for specialised training.

Beyond training, both nations agreed to deepen collaboration in defence technology and industrial development, including joint efforts in surveillance systems, drone operations, and satellite monitoring to tackle modern security challenges.

The agreement also covers enhanced border security, improved intelligence sharing, and coordinated strategies against non-state armed groups. Türkiye is further expected to provide guidance on disarmament and reintegration programmes to support Nigeria’s management of ex-combatants.

Support for the Nigerian Air Force is another key component, with improvements in maintenance, logistics, and training expected, alongside potential acquisition of helicopters and unmanned aerial systems. Naval cooperation will also be strengthened through maritime training and possible procurement of naval assets.

General Musa described the agreement as a major milestone in Nigeria–Türkiye defence relations, expressing optimism about its impact.

However, security analysts have cautioned that while the partnership is a positive development, prioritising the welfare of military personnel remains crucial to achieving long-term success in tackling insecurity.
