The Benue State Government has officially launched the Benue School Grant Scheme and distributed mobility aids, including motorcycles, to Quality Assurance Officers across the state’s 23 local government areas as part of efforts to strengthen basic education administration and monitoring.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, described the initiative as a bold and visionary intervention by the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia aimed at improving operational sustainability in schools.
According to Adagba, the state government has released N150 million under the scheme, with each headmaster and principal set to receive N50,000 monthly to cover essential school needs such as stationery, continuous assessments, first aid materials, utilities, and minor maintenance.
A statement issued by the Special Assistant to the SUBEB Executive Chairman on Corporate Communications and Community Engagements, Msughter Ataigbough, noted that the programme underscores the government’s commitment to free and compulsory education in the state.
Adagba warned that any headmaster or principal found imposing illegal levies on pupils or parents would face appropriate sanctions, stressing that the grant was designed to eliminate the need for unauthorized charges in public schools.
Representing Governor Alia at the event, Deputy Governor Sam Ode described education as the government’s most valuable investment, adding that the initiative would enhance school administration, improve learning conditions, and strengthen supervision in rural communities through the provision of motorcycles to Quality Assurance Officers.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Margaret Adamu, and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) State Coordinator, Idzi Baba Emmanuel, commended Governor Alia’s commitment to transforming the education sector.
They also praised the collaboration between the Ministry of Education and SUBEB, noting that the partnership has continued to drive meaningful reforms aimed at improving the quality of education across Benue State.
