APC Diaspora Crisis Deepens as Court Sacks CDC Chairman, Acting Leader Takes Over
The internal crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has deepened after the party’s Committee of Diaspora Chairmen (CDC) removed its chairman, Doherty Tunde, following a court ruling that nullified the election which brought him into office.
The decision was reached during an extraordinary meeting of the CDC Executive Committee held via WhatsApp on Tuesday evening. Members said the move was necessary to comply with the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, sitting in Maitama, which declared the election that produced Doherty as chairman of the APC UK chapter invalid.
Doherty had occupied the position of CDC chairman by virtue of serving as chairman of the APC UK chapter. Following the court’s decision, the committee directed him to step aside immediately to avoid violating the court order.
A motion for his removal was moved by Charles Michelletti, Chairman of the APC Ghana chapter and CDC Treasurer, and seconded by Igwe Ibezim, Chairman of the APC Italy chapter and CDC Financial Secretary. The motion called for Doherty to vacate the CDC leadership pending the final resolution of the legal matter.
The committee subsequently voted four to one in favour of appointing Deputy Chairman and APC South Korea chapter chairman, Apostle David Abraham, as Acting Chairman. Those who supported the motion were Michelletti, Ibezim, Hon. Elas Abone of the APC Canada chapter, and Abraham, while Steven Tella of the APC Spain chapter voted against it. Hammed Adefioye of the APC Ireland chapter was absent from the meeting.
According to the committee’s resolutions, Abraham assumes office immediately with full powers as Acting Chairman. He has also been directed to establish an election committee to conduct fresh CDC elections in September 2026, ahead of the expiration of the current executive’s tenure in December, and to publish election guidelines within seven days.
With the latest development, the CDC has officially recognised Apostle David Abraham as its Acting Chairman, while Doherty is now listed as the former chairman of both the APC UK chapter and the Committee of Diaspora Chairmen.
