Governor Hyacinth Alia has signed the Benue State Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant move aimed at transforming the state’s power sector and boosting economic development.

The development was announced on Monday in a statement issued by the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Chief Solomon Iorpev.

According to the statement, the new law is designed to attract private investment into the electricity sector, encourage healthy competition among service providers, strengthen consumer protection, and expand electricity access to communities that have remained underserved.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Alia described the legislation as a landmark achievement that would help drive economic growth, improve power supply, and create sustainable development opportunities across Benue State.

The governor noted that the law is expected to stimulate business activities, support industrial expansion, create jobs, and enhance service delivery in both urban and rural areas. It will also promote stronger cooperation between electricity providers and consumers while increasing investor confidence in the state’s energy sector.

Alia commended the Benue State House of Assembly for passing the bill and reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment capable of attracting investments and fostering long-term development.

He acknowledged that the legislation should have been enacted years earlier but assured residents that his government remains focused on removing obstacles that hinder progress and ensuring the state moves forward.

The governor further called on citizens to support the administration’s development agenda, stressing that despite Benue’s long history, his government is determined to leave behind lasting achievements and deliver more transformative projects for future generations.

The Electricity Bill was among four key measures earlier approved by the Benue State House of Assembly to strengthen infrastructure, resource management, and regulatory systems. The law also provides for the establishment of the Benue State Electricity/Power Management Agency to oversee electricity management and improve power distribution across the state.
