Fed govt moves to end trade malpractices, backs crackdown on revenue leakages

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling trade malpractices, pledging full support for the Presidential Committee on Trade Malpractices (PCTM) as part of efforts to eliminate revenue leakages, protect indigenous industries and accelerate economic growth.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the commitment on Thursday in Abuja while receiving members of the Presidential Committee on Trade Malpractices, led by its Chairman, Malam Dahiru-Ado Kurawa, during a courtesy visit.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Akume said the Tinubu administration remained focused on implementing policies that promote local production, encourage value addition and strengthen institutions charged with safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations in the office of the SGF, Chris Ugwuegbulam, Akume stressed that Nigeria’s economic transformation would depend largely on its ability to expand domestic production while addressing the challenges confronting manufacturers, traders and investors.

The SGF also underscored the importance of credible and reliable data for effective planning, policy formulation and evidence-based decision-making, describing it as critical to achieving sustainable economic development.

Akume commended the Presidential Committee on Trade Malpractices for its efforts to protect the nation’s economy from illicit trade and financial crime.
