MACBAN Chairman Killed After Peace Meeting as Alia Orders Investigation
The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Alhaji Ardo Risku Muhammad, has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Otukpo Local Government Area, in an incident that has heightened security concerns across the state.
According to reports, the attack occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Friday near the Okudu community as Ardo Risku and his associate, Yakubu Isah, were returning from a peace and security meeting held in neighbouring Ohimini Local Government Area.
The meeting was reportedly convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Idekpa to promote peaceful coexistence and address security challenges in the area. However, shortly after the meeting ended, armed assailants allegedly ambushed the victims’ vehicle and opened fire, killing both men on the spot.
The attack has sparked tension among residents, with fears that the incident could undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace in parts of Benue State. Local government authorities and the Benue State Police Command have confirmed the killings and assured the public that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Reacting to the development, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, described the killings as a tragic and unfortunate incident capable of threatening the peace gradually returning to the state. He directed security agencies to launch an immediate investigation, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they are brought to justice.
Governor Alia also appealed to members of MACBAN, community leaders, and residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the government remains committed to maintaining peace and security across Benue State.
Security agencies have since intensified surveillance in the affected communities as investigations continue.
