Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has disclosed plans to introduce a bill seeking a single six-year term for Nigeria’s presidents and state governors after the 2027 general elections.
According to Bamidele, the proposal is designed to replace the current two-term system and ensure that elected leaders concentrate fully on governance without the distractions of re-election campaigns.
He explained that the bill would be among the first pieces of legislation he intends to sponsor in the next Senate. The lawmaker argued that the existing arrangement often compels public office holders to begin political calculations for a second term shortly after assuming office, leaving less time and attention for governance.
Under the proposed framework, presidents and governors would serve only one six-year term, eliminating the pressure associated with seeking re-election. Bamidele said this would encourage leaders to focus on delivering results throughout their tenure.
He further noted that while opinions may differ on the proposal, lawmakers have a responsibility to put forward reforms they believe could strengthen governance and improve the political system.
Bamidele also stressed that laws should evolve to reflect changing realities and societal needs. He added that if the bill secures approval from the National Assembly, constitutional amendments would be required before it can take effect.
