Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, has urged Nigerians not to lose faith despite the security and socio-political challenges facing the country, recalling that during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, he introduced monthly prayer sessions to address incidents of kidnapping, militancy, and killings, According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Monday, June 8, 2026.
He stressed the importance of sustained prayers, particularly for the exposure of those behind acts of terrorism and insecurity across the nation.
The Senate President made the remarks during an Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating this year’s Democracy Day celebration. His comments were contained in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Sunday.
Akpabio noted that Nigeria has repeatedly demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, having successfully navigated periods of political instability, public health emergencies, and insurgent threats.
He said the country’s ability to overcome previous difficulties should encourage citizens to remain hopeful about the future and continue supporting efforts aimed at national progress and stability.
The church service, which was themed “God of Hope, Actualise our Dreams,” brought together senior government officials, religious leaders, and worshippers from different Christian denominations.
The gathering served as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance and to offer prayers for the nation’s continued peace, unity, and development.Reflecting on his experience as governor, Akpabio recounted how security concerns had become a major challenge in Akwa Ibom State during his administration.
According to him, the growing incidents of abduction, militancy, and violent crimes prompted his government to introduce a monthly prayer programme as part of broader efforts to confront the situation and seek divine intervention.
He emphasized that prayer remains a vital tool in confronting insecurity and other national challenges.
The Senate President maintained that Nigerians should continue to seek God’s intervention so that individuals and groups responsible for sponsoring violence and criminal activities would be identified and brought to light, regardless of their positions or affiliations.
He said: “Today I want you to ask the same question, the things happening around us, what if we were not praying. We must continue praying so that the evil doers and their sponsors shall be exposed in Jesus Name.
“If they are in government, they shall be exposed. If they are outside government, they shall be exposed in Jesus Name. Those sponsoring it, whether it is politically motivated or not, may they never have peace until they are defeated.”
