2027: INEC Announces Extension of Continues Voter Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks and announced the rollout of an online self-service registration platform for first-time voters.
The commission disclosed this in a statement released on Friday, explaining that the registration exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, will now end on July 24, 2026, instead of the earlier closing date of July 10.
INEC said the extension followed consultations and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
According to the commission, the extra time is aimed at ensuring that more eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered are given the opportunity to be included in the national register of voters ahead of future elections.
In addition, INEC announced that a fully online self-service registration system for first-time voters will become operational on July 8, 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal.
The commission explained that the platform will allow eligible Nigerians to complete their voter registration, including biometric enrolment, from any location using their personal devices, eliminating the need for physical visits to INEC offices.
It noted that the digital platform is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation, and other security features to safeguard the credibility of the voter register.
INEC urged all eligible citizens who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new online option, stressing that it remains committed to making voter registration more accessible, inclusive, and transparent through the use of technology.
