Labour Party The Labour Party (LP) has elected former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman during the party’s national convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, Abia State.
With her emergence, Usman becomes the first woman in Nigeria’s political history to be elected National Chairman of a major political party.
Usman had earlier been appointed on September 4, 2024, to head the party’s National Caretaker Committee after the tenure of the former National Working Committee expired, creating a leadership vacuum.
She led the party through a challenging period marked by internal leadership disputes, which were later resolved in her favour by the courts.
Before the convention, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already recognised her as Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee following a Federal High Court judgment delivered on January 21, 2026. The ruling was later affirmed by the Court of Appeal on April 21, 2026.
In her acceptance speech, Usman thanked party members for the trust placed in her and promised to reposition the Labour Party for greater success ahead of future elections.
She also praised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, while pledging to promote unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party.
Governor Otti, who spoke during the convention, urged the newly elected National Working Committee to provide purposeful leadership and strengthen the party’s structures across the country.
Other officials elected into the National Working Committee include Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Mrs Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Mrs Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader.
