European teams have endured a disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with only three of the ten nations that have played so far recording victories in their opening matches.
Germany produced the standout performance, thrashing Curacao 7-1, while Sweden defeated Tunisia 5-1. Scotland also secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti to give Europe its third win of the tournament.
However, several European sides failed to secure maximum points. Spain were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde, Belgium played out a 1-1 draw against Egypt, and the Netherlands shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Japan. Switzerland also settled for a 1-1 draw against Qatar, while Bosnia and Herzegovina drew 1-1 with Canada.
Meanwhile, Czechia suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Korea, and Turkey lost 2-0 to Australia.
The results highlight the growing competitiveness of the World Cup, with teams from other continents proving capable of challenging Europe’s traditional football powers. As the group stage continues, pressure will mount on Europe’s biggest teams to improve their performances.
