According to the Nigerian Tribune, former Chief of Army Staff General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has stated that internal security in Nigeria is showing encouraging progress, a development he links to sustained and determined military operations in troubled areas.

The retired general shared his assessment in a press statement issued to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday, May 31, 2026—marking three years since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.

In reviewing the federal government’s defense approach, Buratai examined current efforts aimed at restoring peace in conflict-affected regions. He emphasized that the Nigerian Armed Forces have intensified targeted military actions across the country to address distinct security challenges in various communities. These coordinated operations, he noted, have led to measurable improvements in restoring public order and strengthening the nation’s broader defense posture. The armed forces, he said, have maintained a firm and active presence across multiple operational zones.

Buratai highlighted that ongoing military activities are part of a broader national strategy centered on sustained counterterrorism efforts, anti-banditry operations, and focused internal security measures. These initiatives, he added, are being carried out in all geopolitical zones to eliminate residual threats and enhance safety for ordinary citizens.

By sustaining a high tempo of operations, the military has kept persistent pressure on criminal and insurgent groups, according to Buratai.

Turning to leadership, the former army chief credited the Tinubu administration with taking bold actions to tackle entrenched domestic challenges. He described these policy moves as courageous steps reflecting a strong commitment to national advancement and institutional reform.

Such governance, he argued, is helping steer key sectors back toward stability.Drawing from his extensive career—including senior military command and service as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin—Buratai said his experience provides him with a comprehensive perspective on regional and international security dynamics. This insight, he explained, informs his positive outlook on Nigeria’s current security direction.

He stressed that continued progress will depend on aligning battlefield tactics with sound strategic decision-making.

Buratai also noted that defense institutions are now focused on consolidating territorial gains through coordinated federal and state-level support to ensure lasting peace.

In closing, he directly commended the President’s leadership over the past three years, applauding the administration for shifting the country’s course.

“You have not only made history,” Buratai said, “but you have broken a long-standing cycle that held our nation back for too long in critical areas of national life and development.”
