Viral reports circulating across social media have claimed that controversial Equatorial Guinean figure Baltasar Ebang Engonga has been released from prison after allegedly serving a two-year jail term.
The reports, which quickly gained traction on Facebook, TikTok, X and WhatsApp, sparked widespread reactions from social media users across Africa, with many celebrating the supposed release of the embattled former government official.
Egonga became a global internet sensation in 2024 following the leak of multiple explicit videos linked to him, a scandal that generated massive controversy in Equatorial Guinea and beyond. The incident reportedly exposed relationships involving wives and relatives of top government officials, triggering outrage and intense public debate.
Following the scandal, authorities in Equatorial Guinea launched investigations into allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office linked to the former official.
However, recent fact-check reports have disputed claims of his release, stating that there is currently no official confirmation from the Equatorial Guinean government or prison authorities that Egonga has regained freedom. Reports indicate that he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in 2025 over corruption and embezzlement-related offences.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the viral claims, Egonga’s name has once again dominated conversations online, with supporters and critics clashing over his controversial legacy.
