Aston Villa defeated SC Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul to win the 2026 UEFA Europa League trophy, ending a 44-year wait for major European silverware in a historic night at the Tüpras Stadium.
The victory marks Villa’s first major continental triumph since lifting the 1982 European Cup, while manager Unai Emery further cemented his legacy by becoming the first coach to win the competition five times with three different clubs.
After a tense and competitive opening period, Villa took control late in the first half. Youri Tielemans opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a stunning volley from a well-worked set-piece that beat Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.
Villa doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Emiliano Buendía curled a precise effort into the net, leaving the Bundesliga side with a huge task after the break.
The Premier League side sealed the historic triumph in the 58th minute as Morgan Rogers finished off a rapid counter-attack to make it 3-0.
Although Freiburg battled bravely in the first major European final of their 122-year history, they were unable to break down Villa’s disciplined defence led by Emiliano Martínez.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among Aston Villa supporters in Turkey as the club capped off a dream European campaign and secured a return to next season’s UEFA Champions League with a major continental trophy.
